Plot
Matthew "Matt" King is a Honolulu-based lawyer and the only trustee of a family trust of 25,000 acres of pure in Kauai. The land has a great monetary value, but it is also a family heritage. Although Matt was always able to manage his own finances, most of his cousins had spent his legacy. With an out-of-date trust in seven years because of rules against eternity, the King's clan pressured Matt to sell the land for hundreds of millions of dollars. In the middle of this discussion, boating accidents have made Matt's wife, Elizabeth, coma. With Elizabeth hospitalized, Matt is forced to deal with his two troubled daughters, a 10-year-old Scottie seeking attention by intimidating other children, and a 17-year-old Alex who has a history of substance abuse and gone to private dormitories. schools on the Big Island. The doctor determines that Elizabeth's coma is irreversible and his life will direct all life support to stop. When Matt tells Alex, he reveals that he caught Elizabeth having an affair before the accident, causing a major rift between his mother and daughter.
Two close family friends told Matt that Elizabeth was unhappy and wanted to leave her for her lover, Brian Speer, a real estate agent. After Matt arranges his friends to say goodbye to Elizabeth, he decides that Speer should also have a chance. She and the girls, as well as girlfriend girlfriend, Sid, go to Kauai to look for Brian. While there, Matt's cousin, Hugh mentions that Brian is brother-in-law to Don Hollitzer, the developer to whom the family wants to sell the land. Brian stood up to make a small profit from the sales commission. Matt confronts Brian and informs her that Elizabeth is dying and offers him a chance to meet him one last time. Brian refused, admitting that even though Elizabeth loved him, it was just a leap to him; he loves his wife, Julie and their children, then apologizes to Matt for the pain he causes.
When Elizabeth was cut off from life support, her father, Scott admonished Matt for not being a more generous and loving husband. Choosing not to reveal details of his affair to Scott, Matt agrees, but Sid and Alex both suddenly defend Matt. At King's family gathering, Matt rejected most of his cousins who supported the sale to Hollitzer. Matt decides to defend the ground and look for a different solution to the problems posed by the rules against eternity. Surprised, Hugh told Matt that he and the other cousins would take legal action if Matt refused to sell, but Matt was not affected.
After learning of Brian's affair with Elizabeth and realizing that she would not be visiting, Julie came to the hospital. She cried admitting to Elizabeth that she wanted to hate him for "trying to destroy" her family, but she forgave him. Matt finally comes to terms with his wife's betrayal and his impending death. He kissed goodbye, followed by Alex and Scottie, and then, they spread Elizabeth's ashes in the ocean off Waikiki. Then the three of them sat at home sharing ice cream and watching television, all wrapped in Hawaiian Hawaiian blankets lying in it.

Production
The film began filming at a location in Hawaii on March 15, 2010. Most of the films were taken in Honolulu and around Hanalei Bay. The location used as Matt King's house does not have the banyan tree described in this book; the filmmakers solve the problem by transplanting the banyan. For scenes where the King's family drove to the ridge to see their land, the film employs a 3,000-acre private cattle ranch on Kauai's southern coast, Kipu Ranch. Kaui Hart Hemmings, the novelist in which the film is headquartered, has a cameo as Matt King's secretary.
The personal boarding school attended by Alex King is described as the Mid-Pacific Institute, located in Honolulu, O ? ahu. This is contrary to the scenes in the movie where Matt and Scottie boarded the plane to Big Island to pick Alex. Kaui Hart Hemmings states that the Hawaiian Preparatory Academy, located in Kamuela, Hawai ? i (Big Island), is an inspiration for private boarding schools.
Post-production begins on June 14, and continues through February 2011. The show aired at Telluride, Toronto and New York film festivals, and was originally scheduled to have a limited release on December 16, 2011, but was moved to November 23, 2011 and then November 18, 2011.
