Malta is a carbonated light malt beverage, brewed from barley, hops, and water like beer; color of corn and caramel can also be added. However, Malta is non-alcoholic, it has a strong beer odor and flavor and is consumed in the same way as beer and soda or cola in its original carbonate form, and to some extent, ice tea is in non-carbonated form.

Malta is like an unfermented beer. The color is similar to the stout (dark brown) but very sweet, generally described as a flavor like molasses. Unlike beer, ice is often added to Malta when consumed. The popular way Latin Americans sometimes drink malta is by mixing it with condensed milk or yawning.

Distribution

Most of Malta is brewed in the Caribbean and can be purchased in areas with large Caribbean populations. Apart from the Caribbean islands, it is also popular in Caribbean coastal areas such as CuraÃÆ'§ao, Aruba, Haiti, Panama, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Cuba and Venezuela and countries sharing Caribbean beaches. Malta is brewed all over the world, and is popular in many parts of Africa such as Nigeria which has its own first malt brand - Maltex in 1967. It is also sold in Chad, Ghana, Cameroon and around the Indian Ocean. Malta Guinness is brewed under an international license.

Malta comes from Germany as Malzbier ("malt beer"), malt fermented malt black beer about 2% ABV, leaving a considerable amount of sugar leftover in the finished beer. Malzbier in its original form was replaced in the 1960s by its modern form, formulated from water, glucose syrup, malt extract and hops extract, which have been marketed since the second half of the 19th century, especially in Denmark. Such formulated drinks are called Malztrunk ("malt beverage") according to German law, as they are not fermented. In everyday use, Malzbier still remains, along with other nicknames such as Kinderbier ("beer children"). Some indigenous Malzbiere are available in Germany, especially in Cologne, where MalzmÃÆ'¼hle beer taps and Sion sell them with their traditional KÃÆ'¶lsch. Many German factories have malta within their range, sometimes produced under license (eg Vitamalz).

Malta is also sometimes called "champagne cola" by some brands. However, there is a separate beverage type with this name, has a flavor of chewing gum. Despite this designation, there is no champagne or cola drink.

Due to its distinctive color, malta is sometimes known as black beer.

Malta is rich in B vitamins. Several factories, such as Albani Brewery of Denmark, fortify their malta non-alcoholic beverages with Vitamin B complex. Albani Brewery claimed on their website to become the first brewery to create a non-alcoholic malt drink in 1859.
