Histori

In 1642, Anthony Van Corlaer died while trying to swim across the Hudson from nearby Spuyten Duyvil. A witness to Van Corlaer's death stated that the "demon" in the form of a giant fish swam and began "grabbing the sturdy Anthony with his legs and dragging him under the waves." This is probably the earliest recorded shark attack in the New World. At the end of the 17th century, Frederick Philipse, the king of Philipse Manor in Westchester County, got permission to build a bridge across the Duyvil River Spuyten and charge a fee. "King's Bridge", located approximately in the south and parallel to where West 230th Street lies today, opened in 1693.

At the start of the housing construction, Riverdale was a 19th-century plantation area where many of the Manhattan moguls built their country plantations; for example, in northern Riverdale, now Fieldston is part of the Major Joseph Delafield plantation, which bought 250 acres (100 ha) in 1829, and named it after his family's land in England. At the turn of the century, the new popularity of rail travel allows wealthy entrepreneurs to make Riverdale their home throughout the year. Fieldston, owned by private associations, is a very intact example of the upper-class suburbs of the 20th century. The Hudson Hill neighborhood retains many of its historic mansions. The Riverdale elite private schools and historic churches also reflect this past. Environmental development began in the second half of the 19th century after the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad came. The track originally crossed Spuyten Duyvil Creek and into Manhattan on the west side, but Cornelius Vanderbilt wanted to consolidate its rail operations into one terminal, so he had a trail laid along the north side of the Harlem River so that trains coming south from Albany could join. with Harlem and New Haven lines and coming to Manhattan on Fourth Avenue to his new Grand Central Depot. This is the route still used by Metro-North today.

The Delafield family put a lot in Fieldston in 1909 - the year after IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line was extended to Van Cortlandt Park - 242nd Street, intending to develop the land, which was originally called "Delafield Woods". Instead of using a grid plan, civil engineer Albert E. Wheeler, following the suggestions made by Frederick Law Olmsted and James R. Croes in 1876, devised a road plan that follows the contours of the land and preserved as many forested areas as possible. The first house began in 1910 and was completed in 1911; at the beginning of the 21st century, Fieldston, a privately owned community, is one of the richest neighborhoods in New York City. Leland Weintraub, the commissioner who moved for the creation of the district, notes that "most of the features are generally related to the romantic suburbs of the mid-19th century", including "beautiful sites, landscaping and architecture, connections to cities with accessible transport and customized layouts with topography "is in this area.

In 1928, Genevieve Ludlow Griscom, who was a member of a small religious group called the External Judge of the Living Christ Order, built a 15,000 square foot (1,400 m 2 ) house on 360 West 253rd Street - also called as 5200 Longview Place - for the purpose of revealing the housing of Jesus Christ when the Second Coming takes place. After being abandoned for several years under the successive owner, the house was purchased in 1987 by businessman Jerry Galuten, who revolutionized it into a more luxurious 17 room home. After an on-and-off-market for 8 years, at a asking price of as high as $ 15 million, homes sold in January 2017 for $ 6.25 million.

As the 20th century evolved, upper class apartment buildings and small houses were added to the neighborhood. To this day, Riverdale continues to maintain its character as a prosperous enclave in New York City. The rich history of Riverdale has led to the creation of the Riverdale Historic District.

In May 2009, the FBI ran an offensive operation to prevent a bombing plan in which two Riverdale synagogues were the recommended target. This followed the Molotov cocktail attack in 2000 in a different Riverdale synagogue and the Riverdale River bombing of 1989.

On July 26, 2010, the National Weather Service confirmed that the EF1 tornado had crashed into Riverdale the day before. There were no fatalities, but seven people were injured.

On December 1, 2013, a railroad near Spuyten Duyvil station resulted in four deaths and more than 70 injuries, of which 11 were critical.

Geography

Riverdale covers about three square miles in the area. It has one of the highest elevations in New York City, giving its views on the Empire State Building, the George Washington Bridge, the Hudson River, and the New Jersey Palisades. It is also noted for many gardens and verdant green and native forests that complement the landscape of its hills. The neighborhood is bordered to the north by the town of Yonkers in Westchester County, and to the west by the Hudson River, but its east and south borders are often disputed. The AIA Guide to New York City delivers Broadway as the eastern boundary, and the Harlem River as the south. There are several debatable sections in Riverdale:

  • Central Riverdale (Riverdale's "downtown" area - from Manhattan College Parkway to West 232nd Street and from Henry Hudson Parkway to Riverdale Avenue and Waldo Avenue)
  • Fieldston (Riverdale south of West 250th Street, east of Henry Hudson Parkway, north of Manhattan College Parkway, and west of Tibbett Avenue)
  • Hudson Hill (Riverdale above West 246th Street and west of the Henry Hudson Parkway)
  • North Riverdale (Riverdale above West 254th Street and west of Fieldston Road)

  • Spuyten Duyvil / South Riverdale (southernmost part of Riverdale, under West 232nd Street or West 239th Street by multiple definitions.) Including business, commercial and shopping districts which is located on West 231`Street and Broadway)
  • Villanova Heights (subdivision bounded by Fieldston Road to the east, 250th Street to the south, and Henry Hudson Parkway to the west and north)

This lively and beautiful Fieldston area has been designated as a historic district by the New York City Land Conservation Commission in 2006. There is also a 15-acre Historic Riverdale District in the northwestern neighborhood, set in 1990.

Housing

Riverdale is home to the modernist landmark of Saul Victor's house, designed by Ferdinand Gottlieb in 1967. Other famous luxury homes in the Hudson Hill neighborhood include: Greyston (1864), Alderbrook (1880), Stonehurst (1861) and Oaklawn (1863) ) Since 2005, Central Riverdale has experienced a building boom with the addition of many high-rise and high-rise condo buildings.

Prior to the broader development of Riverdale, the housing comprised of large mansions built with great architecture built in the early 20th century, mostly in the Georgian and Tudor revival style, reminiscent of the "rural Connecticut" scene rather than the city. This is largely concentrated in the Fieldston section of Riverdale, known as a plantation area. In addition, more affordable pre-war buildings and small houses are scattered throughout Riverdale. The 1950s saw the construction of many low brick buildings (six floors). In the early to mid 1960s, a number of larger brick towers (10-20 floors) began to appear. Many of the full-service buildings featuring doormen are designed by architect Philip Birnbaum, who designs more than 300 buildings in the city, including Skyview, Windsors, and Whitehall.

In 1974, a large residential and school complex, such as a fort was erected in North Riverdale by the Soviet Union's Permanent Mission to the United Nations (now the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the UN) to accommodate diplomats and their families. This 20-storey building is built from top to bottom, with the top floor built first.

In the 1980s, most of the apartment buildings owned by single landlords and hired, converted into cooperatives. Unlike most Bronx, Riverdale is a housing mostly occupied by the owners. Spuyten Duyvil has the highest concentrations in Riverdale with the century, 555 Kappock, and Winston Churchill next to each other. Since 2005, Central Riverdale has been experiencing a building boom with the addition of many high- and high-rise condominium buildings that contrast with older brick styles.

In August 2008, Columbia University purchased an almost completed apartment building near the Henry Hudson Parkway for use as a faculty housing.
