History

Former Laval mayor, Gilles Vaillancourt, announced the project on February 13, 2012. The facility is managed by Evenko, the same company that operates the Bell Center in Montreal, home of the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League. As in the case of Bell Center, naming rights for the Laval arena were acquired by Bell Canada. The project cost is roughly doubled since it was first announced. Originally announced by Vaillancourt in 2012 at a cost of $ 92.6 million, the forecast was revised less than a year later to $ 150 million. In March 2014, Laval's new mayor, Marc Demers estimates that the cost of Place Bell will double to $ 200 million, as the costs are not accounted for by the previous administration. The Government of Quebec is committed to contributing $ 46 million; Demers requested that the province bear more costs, as it did for other arena projects.

The initial plan called for an arena to be built in the Quartier de l'Agora district of the city, next to the Laval court house, but the unstable ground at the site caused the movement. In October 2012, the city announced that the project will be located adjacent to Montmorency station from the Orange Montreal Metro Line.

Construction begins at the end of 2014 and is completed in 2017.

On July 11, 2016, Montreal Canadiens announced it would relocate the American Hockey League affiliate, later known as St John's IceCaps, to Bell Place in 2017. On September 8, 2016, Canadiens announced the team would be named Laval Rocket.
