History

Mazza Gallerie is an early project of Herbert S. Miller's Western Development Corporation, which later developed Potomac Mills, Georgetown Park, and Washington Harbor. Miller brings together property owners Olga Mazza and Stanley Marcus from Neiman Marcus with a vision for the construction of retail and mixed housing, but the housing component has never been approved.

The center did not fit its potential, saw a high vacancy rate. In June 1997, a group led by Daniel McCaffery, who had the development of the Friendship Center on Wisconsin Avenue, earned a $ 28 million center and embarked on a massive renovation. The redesigned center opens up a marble-block exterior with new windows, better lighting, and additional entrances. Among the new venues are the new General Cinemas theater and the 120-seat restaurant, The R Room, owned by General Cinemas but operated by the restaurant division of Neiman Marcus. It closed in December 2000 and a space that has since been vacant apart from a tentan from 2007 to 2009.
