Gloria Travis Tanner (born July 16, 1935) is a former politician and public figure of the United States. In 1994 he became the first African American woman to become a Colorado state senator. In 2000 he founded a training and leadership institution for black women in Colorado. She was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2002.

Early life and education

Gloria Travis was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to Marcellus Travis and Blanche Arnold Travis. She is one of five siblings.

Prior to college, he was an administrative assistant for the Hearing and Appeals Office at the United States Department of State from 1967 to 1972. He reported for Denver Weekly News, an African American newspaper, from 1972 to 1976, and also working as a real estate agent.

He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 1974 and his master's degree in urban affairs at the University of Colorado in 1976.

Political career

In 1976 Tanner began working as an executive assistant to lieutenant Governor George L. Brown. In 1978 he became executive director of communications for Colorado state senator, Regis Groff.

He succeeded in running for the Colorado State Council for the 7th district in 1985. He became the second African American to fill a leadership position at home with his election as Home Caucasian Minority leader in 1987, a position he held until 1990. After his resignation Groff's self in 1994, Tanner was appointed to replace him. This appointment made him the first African American woman senator in Colorado history. Representing District 33 as a Democrat, he serves as a member of the joint senate budget committee and "sponsors and passes significant legislation relating to civil rights for women and minorities, marriage discrimination in the workplace, parental responsibilities, compensation cost savings workers, and parental rights for adoptive parents ". He retired from the senate on January 1, 2001.

Training and leadership institutions

In October 2000 he announced the establishment of Training Institute and Trainer Counselor Gloria Tanner for the Black Women's Future Leader of Colorado. The institution is a black female bride to serve in state government, on commission, and on board.

Other activities

Tanner is an instigator and co-founder of the Colorado Black Women for Political Action, founded in 1977, and was once chairman of the Caucus Colorado of Black Elected Officials. In 1998 he was elected president of the National Organization of Black/Black Legislators.

Awards and honors

Tanner was named "2000 Legislator of the Year" by the Colorado Council Community Centered Association, and was the co-winner of the "Legislator of the Year" by the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association in 1998. He received the Denver Leadership Award from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce.

She was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2002.

Personal life

In 1955 he married Theodore Ralph Tanner, who preceded him. She has two daughters and a son.
