Sunny Day Real Estate is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington. They were one of the early emo bands and helped build the genre. In 1994, the band released their debut album Diary on Sub Pop Records for critical acclaim. However, shortly after the release of their second LP2 album, the band broke up, with members Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith joining Foo Fighters and Jeremy Enigk starting a solo career. In 1997, they rejoined long enough to record two studio albums and a live album but were eventually disbanded once again in 2001. The band reunited in 2009. Bassist Nate Mendel, who chose to stay with Foo Fighters at a reunion earlier in the year 1997, take part in this reunion. In a 2013 interview with MusicRadar, Mendel says Sunny Day Real Estate is off. According to Mendel, the band sought to record a full-length album after the end of their reunion tour, but the session was "just a mess". In 2014 the band released one song of the sessions, "Lipton Witch," on a 7th split vinyl "with Circa Survive on Record Store Day.

History
Initial years
In 1992, guitarist Dan Hoerner and bassist Nate Mendel met when they became housemates at the University of Washington. After the jam session, they decided to form a band and find a drummer, finally deciding to invite William Goldsmith. Goldsmith played in many bands but decided to join this duo project. They released a demo tape with the name "Empty Set". After the release, the band changed their name from Empty Set to Chewbacca Kaboom, after realizing that a band with the name Empty Set already exists. However, when another demo tape is released, the new name makes them a bit of a concern, and that again can change, this time for 'One Day I Stopped Breathing'. The band finally settled on the name of Sunny Day Real Estate. Mendel declared the band's name "just a random thought that popped into my head that came from the song Talking Heads, '(Nothing But) Flowers'". He feels that since the band's prospects in the world see that every thing that might become a commodity to be bought and sold, it is possible that one day, people will even start selling the sunny days. The lyrics make him reflect on what can be sold as a property, and come with the commercialization of the sunny days.
The newly baptized band started as an instrumental part, but decided to add the singer. After testing with the female vocalist, Hoerner decides to start singing. The band recorded two songs of 7 "self-release called Flatland Spider." After that Mendel took a break for a tour with another band, Christ on a Crutch, and Goldsmith called his high school friend Jeremy Enigk to play along with they were in a new project, Thief, Steal Me Peach, where Hoerner played bass and Enigk became a guitarist. Although Mendel has some reservations, Enigk becomes a full-time member, and shortly, Enigk rises into a permanent frontman Where Hoerner's vocal style is on vocals who are rough and hardcore, Enigk's vocals are higher, the musicians also decided to add a slower tempo and more grooves to their songs. The band's new style continues to shape what music fans and journalists alike consider the "indie- emo. "Emotional hardcore is a style that began in the late 1980s sees differences in sound with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate that deviate far from the tendency of hardcore ore from the original emotional hardcore or emo while kee ping some intensity and style motif.
Diary , self-titled and break - over
The band's debut album, Diary , released by indie label Sub Pop in 1994, was greeted with many positive reviews. In September, the band performed the single "Seven" on the episode of The Jon Stewart Show . A few days later, they recorded some songs for MTV 120 Minutes. Through November and December, the band toured the US with Shudder to Think and Soul Coughing to support the album.
The band is projecting a mysterious presence to the public. While supporting the Diary , the band only allowed one publicity photo and only gave one interview (although, oddly enough, the band posed for an advertisement for Nordstrom's department store chain). In a 1998 interview with Norma Arenas of Texas Is the Reason, Hoerner explained that the band made a fake band name and brought fake vocalists for an advertising shoot, just to keep their original band name on the ad. For much of the early days, the band also refused to play a show in California, for reasons that were never fully explained. When the band was asked to perform in 1994 Almost Christmas Acoustics in Los Angeles for KROQ radio station, Hoerner refused to join them, leaving Enigk, Mendel, and Goldsmith to perform as a trio.
After completing the US tour in 1994, the band rejoined to begin recording a follow-up to Diary . While the events around the session have not been openly discussed, the band is clearly experiencing internal conflict. There is a rumor that the root cause is the sudden conversion of Enigk to Christianity. In early 1995, the band announced that it was disbanding.
There is a lot of talk but little is known about the reason for the breakup. While many fans focus on Enigk as a born-again Christian, Enigk and other band members then downplay that aspect. In a letter addressed "To Seth and other readers", Enigk responded to rumors about his faith. Ignoring the connection between his conversion and his separation, Enigk writes, "I took the opportunity to call on God, He answered me, my pain was gone, I was joyful I had hope again I must say that the true God is the one who is in Bible, Jesus Christ, "and," I would be foolish to say that He did not perform miracles in my life. "
In November 1995, Sub Pop released a second album of the band, carrying only the label Sunny Day Real Estate . The album was released without cover art or liner notes, and was distributed by Sub Pop as LP2 . It's also sometimes referred to as "The Pink Album", a reference to a solid pink cover. When Sub Pop contacted the band for artwork for release, the band had nothing to offer, so Goldsmith suggested they "make it pink". The album includes songs recorded during a short session, as well as songs like "Rodeo Jones" recorded during the session for Diary .
Enigk admitted in an interview in December 2008 that because the band had broken up during LP2 recording, he and Hoerner had never sat down to complete the lyrics; "We broke up and we felt like we were done.We did not put energy into the artwork or anything. In many songs, there were no lyrics! In many cases we never sat down to write it, because we just wanted to get him out of the way as soon as possible So I just sing a lot of nonsense, which makes it really unique My favorite is the Japanese translation ".
After the breakup, Enigk pursued a solo career, releasing his first solo album, The Return of the Frog Queen , in 1996. Hoerner moved to a rural farm in Washington, while Mendel and Goldsmith joined the Foo Fighters, the band that drummer Nirvana Dave Grohl had formed after Kurt Cobain's death. In 1997, after a dispute with Grohl during a session for the second Foo Fighters record, Goldsmith left the band, but Mendel remained.
Reform, How It Might Be Something At>, The Rising Tide and the second break-up
In 1997, Sub Pop began pressing Enigk and Hoerner about the possibility of releasing a rare record of Sunny Day material, including an unreleased 7-inch band release and previously unreleased songs, such as the band's unused contributions to The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack. Given that an album with just this material would be rather short, the band decided to regroup to record some new songs. While working on a song, the quartet realizes that whatever has made them different is behind them, and decides to continue working on new material, eventually signaling to Sub Pop that they want to release a new album. Originally, Mendel intends to withdraw from Foo Fighters to rejoin Sunny Day, but hedging for months to actually stop. Just before starting the recording session for the album, Mendel rejected the opportunity, noting that he did not want to abandon what he had with Foo Fighters for a potentially tenuous reunion.
In September 1998, the band released How It Feels To Be Something On . For the album, the remaining trio replaced Mendel with Jeff Palmer, former Mommyheads. Palmer left the band after a short time, and he was replaced by Joe Skyward. The title track and "Every Shining Time You Arrive" is meant for Enigk's second solo album, but later became the Sunny Day Real Estate songs. On the album, Hoerner took the opportunity to write about his environmental problems in "100 Million".
While supporting the album, Sub Pop approached them about the possibility of recording the band for the live broadcast. Two shows are documented, one in video and one in audio, in the form of Live . In the weeks following their release, the band recorded their displeasure with videos and CDs, complaining that Sub Pop does not allow them to approve artwork or on the final mix. After fulfilling their contractual obligations, the band left the label.
The search for a new label is a long and difficult process. Some major labels are eager to sign the band, but the band members feel uncomfortable by signing to a major label. The situation resulted in the departure of old manager Greg Williamson. Finally, the band signed a contract with Time Bomb Recordings, an independent label distributed by BMG. With Time Bomb, the band hopes to have indie label freedom backed by a wider distribution of large labels.
The band joins the old HÃÆ'üsker DÃÆ'ü sound engineer Lou Giordano to record The Rising Tide , released in June 2000. The band has high hopes for release, and then toured the long US. At the end of the tour, the band expressed a desire to finally reach out to its European fans by doing its first overseas tour. However, ahead of the tour, Time Bomb withdrew its tour funding, claiming that they were unable to support the band abroad. It turned out that the label had invested huge sums of money to support Peter Searcy's Could You Please and Thank You, and the album was so bad that it almost went bankrupt. Not only are they unable to support Sunny Day Real Estate abroad, they can no longer fund the band at all. A few weeks later, the label stopped operating. Disappointed and disappointed, the band retreated to the house, and then announced their dissolution.
Post-Sunny Day Real Estate
After the second break, Hoerner returned to his ranch in Washington, eventually working with Chris Carrabba on the track for Dashboard Confessional.
In 2001, Enigk and Goldsmith reunited with Mendel to form a new band, called The Fire Theft, released their first self-titled album in 2003. While they had the option to retain the Real Day Sunny Day name, the trio decided it was time to leave the past behind them and start fresh. Mendel stays with Foo Fighters, joins The Fire Theft when his schedule allows it.
In 2006, Enigk revived his solo career by recording and releasing LP World Waits on his own label, Lewis Hollow Records. Following the October 17 release, Enigk embarked on a US-supported solo tour using material from the 2006 release, as well as a previous decade solo album, Return of the Frog Queen .
After some speculation in 2006 and 2008, in April 2009, several websites reported that the band had reunited with all original members. The reunion was confirmed in June 2009, by Seattle radio DJ Andrew Harms of 107.7 The End. The band toured the United States and Canada in September and October 2009, and Australia in February 2010 as part of the Soundwave Festival. The band's first show was a surprise secret show on September 16, 2009 at Hell's Kitchen in Tacoma, Washington. Coinciding with the new tour, the band's first two albums were remastered and reissued with bonus songs and newly written liner notes.
For their 2009 reunion tour, the band often plays a newly written song titled "10".
On September 29, 2009, the band performed "Seven" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The band also performed at Festival Music and Art Festival Coachella 2010, and went on to play their first show in Europe on May 29th at Barcelona's Primavera Sound. After that, they played at HMV Forum in London for their first appearance in the UK on May 31st. They are also scheduled to play at the Groezrock punk festival in Belgium as part of a European tour, but had to cancel their date due to the volcanic ash situation.
In 2009, the band has made a statement from the stage that implies that new recording material may have been in the way. In early 2010, Dan Hoerner confirmed in an interview with Australian music website FasterLouder that the band is currently writing a new album, but in 2013, no new material or tour dates have been announced, and Mendel has returned to recordings and tours with Foo Fighters.
In a 2013 interview with MusicRadar, Mendel stated that Sunny Day Real Estate is currently inactive. According to Mendel, the band attempted to record a new full length after the end of their reunion tour, but the session was "just a mess."
In 2014, the band released a 7 "vinyl split with Circa Survive on Record Store Day.The only band's song from 7", "Lipton Witch," is their first new material released in 14 years.
