SÃÆ' Â £ o Filipe (Portuguese for "Saint Philip", Cape Verdean Creole: San Filipi ) is a city on the west coast of the island of Fogo, Cape Verde. It is the capital of the island, and the seat of SÃÆ'Â £ o Filipe Municipality. The island's airport, SÃÆ'Â £ o Filipe Airport, is located on the southeastern outskirts of the city that offers flights to the two most populous islands of the country and the island's port, 4 km north of the center in Vale de Cavaleiros serving with Fogo islands and Brava. The height of the city is 20 meters and the area is slopey ranging up to 100 meters in the easternmost part. Two streams surround the center of the city.
The main streets are Cobom, Biblioteca, and Las Vegas.

- The old city center, called Baxo, is about 40 m above sea level. Known for its colonial architecture. Since 2000, many homes have been renovated. Many homes have colorful or richly decorated façade, wooden balconies or bay windows. In addition to the beautiful streets with smaller colonial houses, there are about 50 luxurious houses that are representative for viewing. SÃÆ'Â £ o Filipe is proposed to be included in the list of World Heritage Sites due to its historic colonial buildings. They are one of eight sites included in the temporary list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, have been nominated, no date set.
- One of the most representative buildings is the town hall ( Camara Municipal ) built in 1928. In a visible place it is called PraÃÆ'§a 12 de Setembro where small parks and wooden pavilions are well worth a visit.
- The most important Catholic church in the city is Nossa Senhora da ConceiÃÆ'§ÃÆ' £ o built in a relatively modest style at the end of the nineteenth century. The church with its two impressive clock towers has been renovated several times. The last renovation was completed in 2007. Across the church there are some well-preserved colonial homes dating from the 18th century.
- The Market Hall is on the border If Baxo is to a more modern part of the city in Praca Francisco de Assis, the busiest place. The most important bus stop and post office are also here.
- The Museum Casa da MemÃÆ'³ria is at PraÃÆ'§a 12 de Setembro at the merchant's house built in 1820. The neighbor's house is a municipal museum ( Museu Municipal ). In the field are several endemic plants of Fogo, some of which are endangered species, planted, for example Crabo bravo ( Erysimum caboverdiana ) and LÃÆ'ngua de vaca ( Echium vulcanorum ). A small house ( Funco ) was rebuilt in a traditional style using volcanic rock. Part of the inner court sidewalk consists of a basalt rock.
- The historic place PraÃÆ'§a Serpa Pinto is located northwest of the center about 40 m above the beach of Praia da Bila which consists of black volcanic sand. There are some colonial houses, monuments and small parc. Miradouro da Bila sightseeing point If Baxo in the north this place offers beautiful beach scenery and the neighboring island of Brava.
- Part of Fortim Carlota fortress which dates from 1667 is preserved in the south. An impressive canon can be seen up front. The building was used as a prison until 2005.
- In the southern part of the center, the old cemetery of Antigo CemitÃÆ' Â © rio , used until the end of the 20th century, is worth a visit. There are several graves in the classical style dating from the 19th century.
- Outside the historic city center, PraÃÆ'§a Alberto da Silva , a rectangle with a small park and a chapel in a typical residential area rarely visited by tourists, is worth a visit. There are several shops, bakeries and small internet cafes. This place offers beautiful views of the city and surrounding areas.

History
SÃÆ'Â £ o Filipe was founded in the 16th century and is considered the second oldest city in Cape Verde after Ribeira Grande, but the city charter was not given before 1922. Fogo, however, is the fourth inhabited island. In 1528, the city became the center of Fogo's settlement and had two captains JoÃÆ'Â £ o de Meneses Vasconcellos and Afonso de Meneses, both of which were numbered, by about 1540, completely ruled by the Cape Verde colony that ended in 1975. In 1655 SÃ S Filipe is destroyed by the Flemish pirates.

Apart from the Nossa Senhora da ConceiÃÆ'§ÃÆ' £ o , the oldest Catholic church, there is a chapel that can be seen in PraÃÆ'§a Alberto da Silva , the New Apostolic Church and two environments from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Beach
Praia da Bila , the black beach, is 40 m below the city center. It was not too clean, and on some very rough sea days.
Residents of the city prefer the beach at the port of Porto de Vale de Cavaleiros, about 4 km north of Sao Filipe which is the most western point of the island and one of the few that is an artificial part of the land, the other in Cape Verde is Ponta do Sol in Santo AntÃÆ'Â £ o. Apart from the harbor, the water is cleaner and the sea is not so rough. The most popular beach on the island is Ponta da Sallina in SÃÆ' Â £ o Jorge.

Climate
The climate is warmer than the higher parts of the island and equals the lower part of the country. It's slightly moist than the top area. The average temperature is from 19 to 29 Â ° C (66-84 Â ° F), the highest being 29 Â ° C in October and the lowest is 18.7 Â ° C in February. The average rainfall is 272 millimeters, the highest being 121 mm in September and the lowest is without a single precipitation between March and June.
Celebration
One of the municipal holidays is the City Flag Day which on May 1, also the same day as Saint Philip (SÃÆ' Â £ o Filipe), the festival features traditional cola music especially Tabanka Fogo. During the day, SÃÆ'Â £ o Filipe Municipal and Flag Day Tournament of football (football) are played annually on the party date, it was once called the SÃÆ'Â £ Filipe Cup.
Other facilities
The city has a major health center on the island known as SÃÆ'Â £ o Francisco de Assis. It also has a secondary educational institution.

The city has a stadium - Estadio 5 de Julho used for soccer (football) and a multisport complex named SimÃÆ'ÂÂ o Mendes used for basketball and volleyball games.
Acadà © mica do Fogo, Botafogo and VulcÃÆ'  ¢ nicos are football clubs of the city, they are also the most popular islands.
