My Big Fat Greek Wedding Party is a 2002 romantic comedy film directed by Joel Zwick and written by Nia Vardalos, who also starred in the film as Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos, The Greek who fell in love with the non-Greek Anglo-Saxon Protestant White Class Amateur Ian Miller. Plot

30 years old and single, Fotoula "Toula" Portokalos is the scapegoat of his family. The proud daughter of Greek immigrants, she grew up to follow her cultural tradition of marriage and motherhood. His golden brother, Athena, met with the hope of his family by marrying a young man with another Greek and becoming, in Toula's words, "a Greek baby breeding machine". Toula still lives with his parents and works at Dancing Zorba's, his family restaurant in Chicago. Toula longs for his own life away from his intrusive restaurant and family. Frumpy and cynical, he's afraid his life will never change. One day at the restaurant, Toula noticed a handsome young customer - Ian Miller, a school teacher. He tried to talk to her, only to embarrass her with her social awkwardness. Ian is confused by his behavior, and Toula knows he's missed the chance to get to know him.

Toula's idea for independence is to take a computer class at a college. When Toula approached his father Gus about the class, he forbade him, thinking he wanted to leave his family. She insists that she's "smart enough for a girl" and it's too dangerous for her to be in town alone. After some cunning persuasion by his wife, Maria, Gus reluctantly allowed Toula to attend the class. As the class progressed, Toula gained confidence. Toula thrives on her new job, and one day she sees Ian walking through the travel agency. He watched Toula, not admitting that she was the same woman who tried to talk to him in Dancing Zorba. Apart from Toula's embarrassing shame, they introduce themselves and start dating. When Ian realized that Toula was the woman in the restaurant, Toula was sure Ian would lose interest. Instead, he loves her more for who she is, and they become a couple.

Because Ian is not a Greek, Toula maintains the secrecy of relationships from his family, but his parents find out when a family friend sees them kissing in the parking lot. Because he was afraid, Gus was upset that Ian was not ethnic Greek - called Ian "Xeno" - and Gus and Maria told Toula to end the relationship. Toula insists she loves Ian. After the reception, Toula and Ian went for a honeymoon in Greece, both of them appreciated the madness of their Greek families.

An epilogue shows the couple's life six years later. Toula was pregnant "one minute later" after their honeymoon with their daughter, Paris. When Ian and Toula walked Paris from their home to a Greek school, Paris asked why she had to go to a Greek school. Toula replied that she had to go to a Greek school as a child, so Paris would also leave. But he assures her that when the time comes, she can marry anyone she wants. My Greek Big Fat Wedding began as a female drama written by and starring Vardalos, performed for six weeks at the Hudson Backstage Theater in Los Angeles in the summer of 1997. Vardalos then jokingly stated that he only wrote the drama "to get more agents good." The drama is based on the Vardalos family itself in Winnipeg in Canada and on his experience marrying non-Greek man (actor Ian Gomez). The drama was popular, and sold out for most of it, partly because of Vardalos's marketing throughout the Greek Orthodox church in the area. A number of Hollywood executives and celebrities see it, including actress Rita Wilson, who herself is from Greece; Wilson assured her husband, actor Tom Hanks, to see him as well.

Vardalos began meeting with executives about making the movie version of the drama and starting writing scenarios as well. However, the meeting proved futile as executives insisted on making a change that they felt would make the film easier to market, which Vardalos objected: this included changing the storyline, getting the famous actress in the lead role (Marisa Tomei is one of the names mentioned) , and turning family ethnicity into Hispanics. Two months after the initial screening of the game ended, the production company Hanks, Playtone, contacted Vardalos about producing the film based on his vision for it; they also agreed to reassemble the game in early 1998, this time at LA's Globe Theater. Legacy

Television series

The film inspired the 2003 short TV series My Big Fat Greek Life, with most of the main characters being played by the same actor, with the exception of Steven Eckholdt replacing Corbett as his husband. Corbett has signed up to the Lucky TV series. She is scheduled to appear as the best friend of her successor character, but the show was canceled before she appeared. This event received bad reviews from critics who recorded random character entrances and "adjustments" of serious plots that did not match the film.

The seven episodes of this series are available on DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, whose TV studio division produces the show.

Sequel
