Because Hughesville, though small, is considered a strategic geographical center of the Southern Maryland tri-county region, it houses institutions such as headquarters for the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, animal shelters, economic development councils, salesperson councils, and homeless women shelters , which serves the tri-county area. There is also the Girl Scout camp. The city lacks traditional layout streets, but consists only of businesses along the highway and some very small remote housing developments.
