Harrisburg International Airport (IATA: MDT , ICAO: KMDT , FAA LID: MDT ) is a public airport in Lower Swatara Township, Pennsylvania, nine miles (15 km) southeast of Harrisburg. Owned by Regional Airport Authority of Susquehanna Region.

The MDT airport code refers to Middletown, a suburb of Harrisburg which is the mailing address of the airport. The aircraft landing at MDT from the south is often directed near Three Mile Island a few miles from the airport. The airport, often referred to as HIA, is the main commercial airport in South Central Pennsylvania and is the third busiest airport in Pennsylvania for passenger enplanements and cargo shipments behind Philadelphia International Airport and Pittsburgh International Airport.

Histori

Harrisburg International Airport has been serving central-south Pennsylvania for over 100 years. Beginning in 1898, the US Army Signal Corps was placed here. This was followed by the first military aircraft landing in 1918 in place of the Olmsted Field of the US Air Force.

The Middletown Air Depot (later Middletown Air Materiel Area) at Olmsted provided logistical support and maintenance of military aircraft until it closed in 1969. In 1968, the airline moved from the Capital Airport to the former Air Force base, renamed Country Section Olmstead Airport . The airport was renamed Harrisburg International Airport in 1973. Architects William Pereira designed new terminals, completed in 1973.

In 1998, the Commonwealth transferred ownership to the Regional Airport Authority of the Susquehanna Region (SARAA). The Council of Authorities consists of community volunteers designated for staggering, five-year terms by elected officials from Cumberland, Dauphin, and York districts, the cities of Harrisburg and York, and the towns of Fairview and Lower Swatara.

About 1,400 people work in Harrisburg International Airport system.

A new 360,000 square foot terminal was completed in 2004. It cost $ 120 million and was designed by The Sheward Partnership.

Facilities and airplanes

Harrisburg International Airport covers 680 hectares (280 ha) at an altitude of 310 feet (94 m) above sea level on average. It has one asphalt foundation, 13/31, 10,001 x 200 feet (3.048 x 61 m).

Runway 13 has a CAT III approach that allows operation of up to 600 feet (180 m) RVR (Runway Visual Range). The airport has a Control System for Movement of Surface Movement (SMGCS) which enables the movement of land and aircraft vehicles during visibility is reduced (below 1,200 feet (370 m) RVR to 600 feet (180 m) RVR).

The airfield also boasts a 140-foot control tower and related control approaches manned and operated by FAA air traffic controllers.

In 2005 the airport had 71,190 aircraft operations, averaging 195 per day: 54% of air taxis, 22% of general aviation, 13% commercial scheduled, and 12% military. 29 aircraft later based at this airport: 17% single engine, 28% multi-engine, 31% jet, 3% helicopter and 21% military.

The terminal has 12 gates and is the index finger located near the center of the airfield, almost parallel to the runway.

Ground Transport

Built in 2004, and attached to a new terminal building via a climate-controlled sky bridge, the Multi-modal Transport Facility (MMTF) is a four-story facility that handles all ground transportation. The top three levels have 2,504 parking spaces for Short Term, Daily, and Long Term Public Parking. The first level accommodates all the limousines, taxis, hotel shuttles, public buses and charters, plus many rental/return cars.

In the first floor lobby area there are six car rental, toilet, flight and bus information counters, and a seating area. On the second floor of the lobby area, the climate-controlled moving sidewalk is connected to the airway to the terminal.

Route 7 of the Capital Territory Transit System runs into downtown Harrisburg and surrounding communities. The Middletown Amtrak Station, about 3 miles (5 km) east of Terminal, has Amtrak service through the Keystone corridor. There is a proposal to build a new railway terminal adjacent to the MMTF, but the final location chosen for the new station is about 2 miles (3.2 km) east, in Middletown, PA.

Pennsylvania Air National Guard use

Despite the closure of the Olmsted AFB in 1969, the US Air Force continued the presence of the National Water Guard in Harrisburg in the form of the Harrisburg Air National Guard Station and 193 Special Operations of the Pennsylvania Air Wing (193 SOW), Special Operations Air Force Command (AFSOC) -gained aircraft unit flying Commando Solo EC-130. 193 SOW was the sole operator of this essential aircraft asset for all US Air Forces and in 2001 transferred from EC-130E to the new EC-130J variant. The Wing has seen extensive Federal services in recent years to support Operation Just Cause, Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

Harrisburg International Airport remains an active touch and goes to practice the foundation for SAM 28000 and SAM 29000. Both of these aircraft carry the President. They are also known as Air Force One, a call that was adopted when the president boarded a good plane (or another Air Force plane in this case). Air Force pilots use the habit of VC-25 (Boeing 747) to practice through touch and go to the airport. These exercises are done randomly (for obvious safety reasons), but they tend to be seen around the week. The Air Force uses MDT as an exercise airport for a number of reasons: the grounds are long enough to load 747, the traffic is relatively low, close to Andrews Air Force Base, and the presence of the Air National Guard at MDT.
