Biography

Born to a Jewish family, Sylvia's son (nÃÆ' Â © e Steinberg) and Albert Toll, she grew up in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. His father, who emigrated from Ukraine, was a billionaire investor who lost everything in the stock market crash of 1929. His first job was at Camp Powhatan in Otisfield, Maine where he was a counselor; now known as Seeds of Peace and dedicated to bringing together Arab, Israeli, Indian and Pakistani teenagers to promote peaceful conflict resolution. In 1963, he graduated with a B.A. from Cornell University; and in 1966, he earned an LLB, cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. In 1967, Toll and his brother Bruce E. Toll founded Toll Brothers with a focus on building a luxury home ($ 500,000) starting with a plot of land in Chester County, Pennsylvania given to them by their father. They develop businesses using a conservative financial model always include 10 percent of bearings into all of their projects and never assume price appreciation during construction. Bruce is responsible for bookkeeping and Robert's side of business law. In the late 1980s, they flourished from the Northeast to Washington, D.C. and in the mid-1990s, to California. Tolls are credited with luxury housing that mass-produce by taking some of the standard home styles and scaling up several fold. Toll Brothers then evolved into building an "active-adult" community for rich and rich urbanites for the prosperous people (Toll Brothers City Living).

In 2010, Toll resigned as CEO of the Toll Brothers even though he remains active in his management. In November 2013, Toll Brothers bought Shapell Homes (founded by Nathan Shapell) for $ 1.6 billion.

Philanthropy and appreciation

In 1990, Tolls sponsored 58 third graders in a program called Say Yes to Education which ensured college education for each of them. He served on the Board of Directors of the Cornell Real Estate Board, the Metropolitan Opera, Seeds of Peace, and Beth Shalom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania. He has been a long-term fundraiser for the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

Toll is a member of the Democratic National Finance Committee during Obama's campaign. Toll also serves on the Supervisory Board at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and as the guardian of the University of Pennsylvania where he founded Albert & Sylvia Toll Scholarship Foundation, named after her parents. In 2005, Toll was appointed CEO of the Year by Professional Builder Magazine. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, he was named the "Best CEO in the Builder & Product Making industry" by Institutional Investor magazine.

Personal life

Toll has been married twice. In 1975, he married his second wife, Jane. They live in Miami Beach, Florida. He had one son from his first marriage; Toll has two daughters from his first marriage; and they have sons and daughters together. In March 2018, he was worth about $ 1 billion.
