The Manhattan School of Music (MSM) is a music conservatory located on the Upper West Side of New York City. The school offers degrees at bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in performance and classical and jazz composition.
Founded in 1917, the school is located on Claremont Avenue in Morningside Heights neighborhood in New York City, adjacent to Broadway and West 122nd Street (Seminary Row). MSM Campus was originally home to the Art Institute of Music (later Juilliard) until Juilliard migrated to Lincoln Center in Midtown Manhattan. The property was originally owned by Bloomingdale Insane Asylum until the Music Art Institute bought it in 1910. The Columbia University campus is nearby, where it has been since 1895. Many students live in the school boarding hall, Andersen Hall. In 2011, 75% of students came from outside New York State and 31% came from outside the United States.

Histori
Manhattan School of Music was founded in 1917-1918, by pianist and philanthropist Janet D. Schenck, as the School of Environmental Music. Originally located at the Union Settlement Association on East 104th St in Manhattan East Harlem, the school moved into a brownstone building on East 105th St. Pablo Casals and Harold Bauer were among the first of many renowned artists to offer guidance to school. Finally, his name was changed to Manhattan School of Music.
In 1943, the school's artistic and academic growth resulted in a charter amendment to grant a degree in music. The next two amendments endorsed the offer in 1947 from a music master's degree and, in 1974, a doctorate of music art. In 1956, Dr. Schenck retired and baritone Metropolitan Opera John Brownlee was appointed director, a title that was later revised to the presidency. President Brownlee embarked on the idea of ​​relocating the school to the neighborhood of Morningside Heights; his death occurred only months before his efforts were realized. In 1969, George Schick, the Metropolitan Opera conductor, accompanist, and opera coach, replaced Brownlee as president and led the school move to its current location. He created the opera program, while all other major school functions were managed by Senior Director Stanley Bednar.
John O. Crosby, founder and general director of Santa Fe Opera, was appointed president in 1976. He was followed by Gideon W. Waldrop, who was appointed in 1986, and Peter C. Simon in 1989. On 1 July 1992, Marta Casals Istomin was appointed president, a position he held until October 2005 when he retired.
Dr. Robert Sirota, former director of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, took over the presidency in 2005. He was replaced by James Gandre, former Roosevelt University, effective May 2013.

Manhattan School of Music offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs. The classics, jazz majors, the Pinchas Zukerman Program, the cross from Barnard College in Columbia, and the latest musical theater departments all take part in the conservatory.

Musical theater
Manhattan School of Music's musical theater program is the first independent music conservatory in New York (and only the second in the country) to offer a musical theater degree program. The program is directed by Luis Perez and the artistic advisory committee that includes Broadway stars such as Victoria Clark, Joanna Gleason, Norm Lewis, Susan Stroman, Tommy Tune, Kelli O'Hara, Ted Chapin, Bebe Neuwrith, Christine Ebersole, Graciela Daniele, James Naughton, Shular Hensley, Ron Raines, and more.
Created in 2016, this program has been considered one of the country's top MT programs with a current acceptance rate of about 1.6% (based on 3000 applicants in each 2015-2016, audition season 2016-2017 so far).

Manhattan School of Music offers a wide range of live viewership experiences for their students. There are three main orchestras: The MSM Symphony, Philharmonia, and Sinfonia Chamber. In addition, many smaller ensembles are strung together for orchestral music. MSM Wind Ensemble also performs throughout the year. The Jazz Arts program also contains various ensembles, such as Jazz Philharmonic (full jazz big band with full orchestra), Jazz Orchestra, Concert Jazz Band, Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and Chamber Jazz Ensemble. Tactus, an ensemble for contemporary room music, consists of graduate students in the School's Contemporary Performance Program (CPP). The school also holds annual concert competitions where the winners are offered the chance to perform with the Symphony Orchestra.
Place of performance
The Manhattan School contains several showrooms, each dedicated to separate ensemble requirements. The biggest one is Neidorff-Karpati Hall (formerly Auditorium John C. Borden), where all major orchestra and jazz ensemble concerts are held. The hall is undergoing major renovations. The smaller Greenfield Recital Hall and Miller Recital Hall are used for solo and small recital ensembles, especially for graduation-demanded recitals. The Ades Performance Space is one of the newest venues of MSM, and is used to present everything from operas that are completely staged to contemporary chamber music. The newly-dedicated Carla Bossi-Comelli Studio on the seventh floor is a versatile exercise room and show that used to be a dance studio; Other smaller showrooms include Myers Recording Studio, Mikowsky Recital Hall, and Pforzheimer Hall.
