Today, the WDO includes more than 140 member organizations in more than 40 countries, representing an estimated 150,000 designers.

The main purpose of the association is to advance the discipline of industrial design at the international level. To do this, WDO undertakes a number of global attraction initiatives to support the effectiveness of industrial design in an effort to address the needs and aspirations of people around the world, to improve the quality of life, and help improve the economies of countries around the world. The WDO holds a United Nations Special Consultative Status which empowers them to make changes, and works to address the United Nations Sustainable Development Objectives.

Histori

Jacques Vià © à © first presented the idea to form a society to represent the international industrial designers at the international congress of the Institut d'Esthetique Industrielle in 1953. The International Council of the Industrial Society of Designers was formally established at a meeting in London on 29 June, 1957. The name Icsid showed a spirit that protects the interests of designers who practice and to ensure global standards of design. Individuals who were first elected officials in the Executive Board therefore do not act on personal beliefs, but represent the voices of members of the community and the international design community.

The organization was later officially registered in Paris and set up their headquarters there. Icsid's initial goal is to help the industry's public awareness of the designer, to improve the design standards by setting standards for training and education, and to encourage cooperation between industry designers around the world. To do this, in 1959 Icsid hosted the first Congress and General Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden. At this first Congress the Icsid Constitution was formally adopted, along with the first definition of industrial design that can be found on their website (see external references). During this Congress, the official name of Icsid was changed from the International Council of the Industrial Designers Society to the International Council of the Industrial Design Society to reflect that the organization will engage itself outside of professional practice issues.

As long as Icsid continues to grow and now has members from all over the world in both capitalist and non-capitalist countries. Icsid now hosts congresses in places like Venice, Paris, Vienna, Montreal, Slovenia, Glasgow, Taipei, Toronto, Sydney, Kyoto and London.

In 1963, Icsid was granted a special status with UNESCO, with whom Icsid continued to work on many projects, using designs to improve the human condition. As their humanitarian interests grew, Icsid decided to create a new type of conference that would join the industrial designer in the host country to study the issue of regional and international significance. The new conference was held in Minsk in 1971, becoming the first Icsid Interdesign seminar. These seminars provide opportunities for professional development of designers who train in the middle of their careers, and to enable them to focus their skills on solving internationally important problems. The first and subsequent Interdesign Conference, consolidating Icsid's position as the driving force of international cooperation.

In 1971, the 7th Congress of the International Council of the Industrial Design Society (ICSID), organized by the Agrupación de Disseny Industrial del Foment de les Arts Decoratives (ADI/FAD) at Eivissa (Ibiza), turned out to be an event without precedent in Spain: socialization and examples of how collaborative energy work, vitality, intellectual and recreational reflection can be placed on dialogue-based project services with the capacity to generate imaginative approaches and develop new behavior patterns.

In 1974, the Icsid Secretariat moved from Paris, France to Brussels, Belgium, moved to Helsinki, Finland, and in 2005, he settled in Montreal, Quebec, Canada where his current residence.

In the 1980s, collaboration became more important so that the joint Icsid/Icograda/IFI Congress was held in Helsinki. The impetus for this joint conference is a direct recommendation made by Icsid members to explore closer relationships with other world design organizations. At their General Assembly, all participants unanimously approve directions to investigate options for a closer working relationship in the future. These organizations then joined UNESCO to bring together doctors, industrial and graphic designers, and assistants to develop basic furniture for rural health centers, packing, transportation, cooling, and vaccine injections and the design of data collection tools for use in the field.

In 2003, Icsid and Icograda ratified agreements between the two organizations during their respective General Assembly to form the International Design Alliance , a multidisciplinary partnership that supports design. In 2008, IDA partners welcomed the third member, IFI (International Federation of Architects/Interior Designers). Together in 2011, the three partners held a joint congress in Taipei, Taiwan called the IDA Congress. The Alliance was suspended in November 2013.

In 2017, in January Icsid formally became the World Design Organization. (WDO)

World Design Capital

Under the direction of WDO, Project World Design CapitalÃ,® is a biennial appointment given to a city that has been proven through the use of design in revitalizing urban areas while also promoting innovative designs. Through this initiative, the city of Torino, Italy was designated as the first World Design Capital in 2008. With the help of WDO, the annual program is structured to involve cities in World Design Capital events, including galas and exhibitions.

Some processes are done before pointing to the city, including calls for submissions, appraisal submissions, short list of cities, city visits and the final selection process. Selection committees are appointed to collapse cities and the WDC Organizing Committee selects designated cities.

Current World Design Capital Network:

  • World Design CapitalÃ,® 2008 Torino
  • World Design CapitalÃ,® 2010 Seoul
  • World Design CapitalÃ,® 2012 Helsinki
  • World Design CapitalÃ,® 2014 Cape Town

World Design Impact Prize

The World Design Impact Prize is developed to provide socially responsible projects or design initiatives, where designs are proven or potentially proven to enrich or enhance the quality of life on a social, environmental, cultural or economic scale. This biennial award aims to promote and recognize projects that are driven by industrial design and use designs for social good.

The first World Design Impact Prize was awarded in Helsinki at the World Design Capital (WDC) International Design Gala in February 2012. The event was presented to the Carers Community Project from Nairobi.

The second cycle of the World Design Impact Prize was launched on April 9, 2013 with a new identity and a call for public advice. The International Review Panel consists of five international representatives including three WDO Members and two experienced professionals in the field of design for social good

The nomination period for WDO Membership is from 29 June to 29 July 2013 and the nominated project is announced on September 10, 2013. 26 projects from 15 countries complete the application and are on display at the World Design Impact Prize website.

The Review Panel collectively selected 7 projects, announced at the WDO General Assembly on November 18, 2013 in Montreal (Canada). The quality of projects nominated in the second cycle encourages the Review Panel to select 7 projects instead of 6 as originally intended. Selected projects (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Behavioral Behavior (ABC)
  • HomeStove BioLite
  • Family by Family
  • Laddoo Project
  • Leveraged Freedom Chair
  • Potty Project
  • Refugee Housing Unit

These projects are selected based on criteria of impact, innovation, context and ease of use and because they promote an expanded view of the field of industrial design.

Three finalists will be announced on January 27, 2014 and the award will be presented at World Design CapitalÃ,® International Design Gala in Cape Town (South Africa) in February 2014.

WDO Interdesign

A two-week intensive workshop, Interdesign is a collaboration between international designers and local experts to discuss design issues and seek solutions for implementation. Since 1971, the first Interdesign was held in Minsk, USSR (now Belarusian), where thirty designers work on bread-oriented products subjects.

In 2014, WDO Interdesign under the theme 'Humanising Metropolis' will take place in Mumbai (India), from 5-19 February. Following the call for the app, the list of participants will be announced in mid-December 2013. The event page of Icsid Interdesign Mumbai 2014

World Industrial Design Day

This annual anniversary is held every June 29, WDO anniversary, for industrial designers, academics, design and non-designer students who are impacted by power if the industry designs on a daily basis. This anniversary promotes awareness and celebration of industrial design, encouraging WDO Members and non-members to hold events such as exhibitions, panels, workshops, open houses and other social functions.

From 2009-2011, the annual student poster competition is held for WDO Education students to participate; the event was terminated after the World Design Design Day logo was officially introduced by WDO. Each year, the theme is determined by the WDO Board of Directors and announces the month before 29 June for companies, associations, design schools and design institutes to plan their activities and outreach.

World Design Chat

The WDO World Design Talks was established in 2016 and consists of a series of "workshops that address local challenges with global relevance - such as rapid urbanization, climate change, and migration - from a design perspective." The wisdom that comes out of World Design Talks helps determine who the WDO is and handles their relationship with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
